Orpheus, the mythical Greek hero By playing the lyre, Orpheus lured and enraptured the world of humans and of gods. Gods promised Orpheus to return his deceased lover Eurydice. Nevertheless he could not resist the temptation to look back and see if Eurydice was following him from the Underworld to the new life, so he lost her anew. Orpheus is depicted on the tombstone erected in the memory of Marcus Valerius Verus, one of the first recorded mayors of Ptuj in the 3rd century. The Orpheus monument has always been the most well known Roman landmark in Ptuj.
