Story of the Wine Cellar

In 1890, Franz and Constanza Osterberger bought a house at auction, the present-day Mitra hotel. Together with the house they got the right to open a coffee house. The owners are immortalised by the initials figuring on the façade of the hotel: F(ranz) C(onstanza) O(sterberger).

Franz Osterberger senior died in 1905, and the business was taken over by his widow Constanza. Their children inherited their wealth after she died. The son, Franz Osterberger, took over the governance of the hotel, while another son Alexander signed all deeds as the manager of the estate Osterberger on the mount Gorca, in Dežno 43. Franz Osterberger senior was not only a hotelier and coffee-house keeper but also a winegrower and wine merchant specialising in wines produced in the Haloze region.

Union of Agricultural Societies of Styria awarded the viticulture Osterberger a silver medal with the honorary chart for special achievements in the field of viticulture – the prize of national rank.

To make their wines popular, the Osterbergers kept sending their varietal wines from the Domajna vineyard to numerous schools and associations. Among schools one was particularly important to them – high school for viticulture and fruit growing in Klosterneuburg where young winegrowers were trained also by means of wine tasting, as proved by various preserved acknowledgements.

The Osterbergers were regular attendees of different wine fairs, and in 1927 at the Ljubljana large-scale fair their wines were awarded the golden medal. In 1927 Franz Osterberger was a member of the performance committee of the State Wine Exhibition and Wine Fair in Ptuj, taking place from 15th to 17th January. For efforts invested in the promotion of Slovene wines, the Mayor of Maribor decorated him with a special recognition.

The family Osterberger remained in the hotel until 1945. After World War II the building was confiscated and became the state-owned property.

Nowadays the Osterberger’s wine cellar in the basement of the Mitra hotel offers exquisite wines coming from all winegrowing regions of Slovenia.
