Hotel Mitra Ptuj
The First Hotel in Slovenia’s Oldest City
205. Benevolence, Mithra, Persian God of Light. Double bed.
We all hope someone saves us when we lose our way. Roman soldiers and customs officers relied on Mithra, the god of light and good. They adopted him, built shrines for him, and worshiped him for his good deeds. Although they had to build two aqueducts to the city themselves, they still believed during the works that Mithra would easily give them water if he just hit the rock with an arrow. In the first centuries AD, Ptuj was the European center of Mithraism.
209. Justice, Ptuj Governed by a City Council and Judge (1278 - 1787). Double-bed.
When the Lords of Ptuj emerged as protectors of the city, it was time to fortify the walls (1250) and establish order. For more than five centuries, Ptuj has had a certified city judge. During this time, it was given two statutes (1376 and 1513) with detailed instructions, rights and duties for every citizen. The statute was respected and the judge’s sword feared by merchants, artisans and beggars alike.
307. Exaltation, Ptuj – the City of Wine Cellars. Double-bed.
From the surrounding wine-growing hills of Haloze and Slovenske gorice, a huge amount of must and wine flowed into the town’s cellars. The city's wine merchants, who traded with it all the way to Vienna, made a lot of money and were among Ptuj’s most distinguished and wealthy citizens. The most famous wine families in Ptuj were Fürst, Kaiser, Kofler, Hintze, Ornigg - who was also an extremely successful mayor of Ptuj - and Osterberger, who was once the owner of today's Mitra Hotel.
207. Homeliness, The Home Flock. Double bed.
There is no farmyard without a rooster and no real bourgeois cuisine without a good stew. Poultry farming in Ptuj’s sorroundings is several centuries old, so it is no coincidence that the largest Slovenian and international poultry company – Perutnina Ptuj – originated and still grows in Ptuj. The area is (was) known for the native chicken breed “Štajerka” (eng. Styrian), which is nowadays unfortunately rarely bred. What is still popular today however, is the preparation of Ptuj-Style chicken.
309. Merry-making, The Federation of European Carnival Cities. Double bed.
The “Kurentovanje” has been a traditional carnival event since 1960. From St. Martin's Day, which is on November 11, to the burial of “Pust” on Shrove Tuesday, the "Carnival Prince" takes over the city. Every year they choose a new “prince”, who then takes on the name of a local historical figure. With its unique carnival customs, Ptuj became the first Slovenian city inducted into the Association of European Carnival Cities (FECC).
The taste and aroma of the modernized Kipertz coffee recipe will gently wake your senses and embrace your day.
In the Kipertz café, you can enjoy our own brand of locally roasted coffee, which is only available here, at the Mitra Hotel in Ptuj. “Coffee Story Kipertz” is a continuation of the story of Jožef Kipertz from 1786, the first coffee roaster in Ptuj. The hotel’s café is embedded in the story and carries a centuries-old tradition of coffee making.
