Although Ptuj and its surroundings did not fall under the Illyrian provinces, the French influence was very strong at that time. The city collected food for the French conquerors, hay and straw for their horses, as well as money for their military. Such were the orders, and they had to be obeyed. Despite such hardships, however, French gallantry and culture dominated Europe, its cities, and even its imperial courts in the 19th century.
