What would Ptuj be without Tacitus? The learned and literate man was the first to write down the name of the town of Poetoviona in his historical work (Historiae) in 69 AD. While recording Roman history, he simply could not have avoided writing about the XIII. Legion, which was encamped in Ptuj. It was with his legion’s help that Vespasian occupied the imperial throne in Rome. Thus Tacitus, who diligently described this event, became the historical godfather of this city.
