The nine Frideriks of Ptuj took the city to its golden age that lasted just over three centuries. They fortified the castle, built two monasteries, pushed the eastern border all the way to Središče, all the while being lords in the true sense of the word. They commissioned the construction of St. Mary's Cathedral on Ptujska Gora, the crown gem of Slovene Gothic architecture, fought in the Crusades, shaped the politics and culture of the Habsburg lands … But the almost almighty family collapsed when they failed to produce a male heir.
