Already in ancient times, some of the most important trade and military routes in Europe intersected right here in Ptuj, and the then Roman city of “Petoviona” had as many as 30,000 inhabitants. The Roman legionnaires brought the cult of Mithras – Mithraism to the city from Persia, whose shrines survived until today. In the 15th century, Ptuj was again considered one of the most important European cities, mostly due to very successful wine merchants who traded up and down the Drava River. Today it attracts many visitors with its romantic medieval charm and rich history, culture and culinary tradition.
We especially recommend relaxing in the pools and saunas of the Ptuj thermal baths or the nearby golf course. Tasting top-quality local wines in the 800-year-old Ptuj wine cellar and discovering the many picturesque cycling and wine trails in the vicinity is also a must. In the evening, you can attend some of the entertaining events and social gatherings in one of the many bars or take a quick stroll through the old town center, where a new story from the treasure trove of millennia awaits you around every corner.
