The gods promised to return his dead lover Eurydice to him. By playing the lyre, he seduced and enticed the entire earthly and divine world, but he still could not resist the temptation to see if Eurydice was really following him back into life – again he had lost her. Orpheus was depicted on the tombstone of Marcus Valerius Verus.
